The Simpsons 101 - Simpsons Roasting Over An Open Fire - Review 1
OK, overall this episode is not very good, and only mildly funny in small parts, but i had to start somewhere, and the first episode of anything is normally no good, so best luck for Bart the Genius is all i can say.
Ok to start off with some good points that i noticed. first of all, it really introduces bart’s character quiet well in his “school rebel” side when he is signing the wrong words to the christmas carol. There aren’t many jokes but when they put one in, it’s at least laughable, which i can’t say about other TV shows, which have unfunny jokes the whole way through sometimes. There is some mild suspense that keeps the viewer watching, which is always a good thing and leaves viewers thinking “how are they going to have a good christmas at the end?” The introduction to Patty and Selma is excellent and all the scenes with them in it are funny.
Now for the bad stuff. The first is the quality of the animation, compared to later episodes. Shocking to be honest. Secondly and most annoyingly, the vioce acting and the recording of it goes for the running of the most annoying TV show voices ive ever heard coming from Homer and Lisa in this episode. While we’re on the sound topic, the movements of the characters mouths don’t match the words coming out which always makes it unrealistic and generally pretty annoying or even confusing. Also, Moe and his tavern look extremely crap in this episode, probably why they changed it. and two last ones go to colour shittyness. firstly i can’t stress enough that the animators have been too lazy to even put Barney’s hair a different colour from his skin, which leads to a very unproffesional look. And secondly, towards the end, in the dog race one of the competing dogs is blue. I’m not even going to go into details on that one, it’s obvious why there should not be a blue dog in the race.
Good/Funny Lines
“well…we love bart” - marge is writing the christmas letter and can’t think of anything good bart has acheived.
“there’s only one fat guy who sends us presents and his name ain’t santa” - bart, when homer mentions the word “santa”.
“ow, quit it” - bart repeats it over and over when people touch his removed tatoo scar, which is funny in the repetitive joke sort of way, just in minor.
